This study presents a strategic evaluation of rare earth metal (REM) resources across Africa, with a focus on their geological potential, economic viability, and investment risk landscape. As global demand for critical minerals intensifies due to the transition toward green technologies and digital infrastructure, Africa’s REM endowment offers a timely and potentially transformative development opportunity. The study synthesizes geological data from major carbonatite and alkaline complexes in countries such as Malawi, Namibia, South Africa, Burundi, and Nigeria, highlighting their unique rare earth element (REE) mineralization profiles, ranging from light REE-rich monazite deposits to heavy REE-enriched xenotime systems. Economic analysis incorporates feasibility studies, market projections, and policy assessments, illustrating both the revenue generating potential of African REM projects and the structural limitations such as low downstream processing capacity and regulatory inconsistencies. The role of geopolitical factors is explored through case studies like Gakara (Burundi), where high-grade resources remain underexploited due to political instability and export restrictions. The study also assesses regional and continental policy frameworks, including the African Union’s Africa Mining Vision and initiatives by institutions, which aim to harmonize mining regulations and promote value addition through beneficiation and local content. By integrating geological, economic, and governance dimensions, the study emphasizes that Africa’s competitiveness in the global REM market will depend not only on its mineral wealth but also on strategic coordination, institutional reform, and sustainable development planning. The findings serve both technical experts and policy stakeholders seeking to understand how Africa can transition from a raw material supplier to an integrated player in the global REM value chain.
